These witchy witches would make good decorations for a Halloween party. You could thread string up through the pointy hat and dangle them in doorways! Especially the witch on her broomstick!
You will need:
Paper plate
Scissors
Paint
Craft glue
Black felt-tip or gel pen
Coffee stirrer stick or similar (optional)
1. The body is a cone shape and it's made from a quarter of a paper plate. Fold the paper plate in half, then half again, and open up, so you end up with a plate evenly divided into four quarters. Cut along the crease lines.
2. Take one of the quarters, glue along an edge and fold the other side round, to make the cone shape. If you're using a glue gun the cone will probably stay in place straightaway, but we used ordinary craft glue, and found the best way to get it to stick, was to fold the two sides inwards, so they just overlap, keeping the bottom edge lined up, and then attaching paper clips or laundry pegs to hold it in place while the glue dries. This does mean your cone is pretty flat at this stage, but once the glue is dry, you can easily squeeze it back into shape.
2. For the arms of her billowy robe, cut two long triangle pieces from one of your other plate quarters.
3. Paint them black (hold onto the tips while you paint, we'll be snipping this top bit off later), paint the cone black too, and paint the centre part of one of your spare quarters black ON BOTH SIDES. Paint the centre part of another quarter green (for her face) and if you'd like to make a broom, paint the rim orangy yellow.
4. For the hat rim, use something circular like a bottle top to draw round on the black painted card. Then, gently fold the little circle in half and carefully cut away the middle. Start by removing a small part of the middle, and keep cutting until you can slide the paper ring down over the top of the cone to make a decent sized witch's hat.
5. Cut a round shape from the green card and then snip the top part off. Draw on a mean old witchy face. Snip the pointy part of the arm pieces off too.
Glue the arms in place and the face just under the brim of the hat.
6. For her hands, cut a small strip of green card and round both ends. Cut this piece in half and stick under the billowy sleeves. Bend and fold the arms inwards.
7. If you'd like to make a broomstick for your witch, use something sharp like nail scissors to pierce a hole in her middle - this needs to be done by an adult.
Push the coffee stirrer stick in at an angle, look underneath to see where it touches the back of the cone, and make another hole here (you could use an old piece of modelling clay to push against). Push the stick through, and break off any extra you don't need.
8. Glue her hands to the stick - use a paper clip or peg to hold in place.
9. For the brush part of the broom, cut two similar sized small triangles from the orange card. Snip off the tips and cut up the triangle a few times to make it look more bristly.
10. Glue them either side of the stick at the bottom and use another clip or peg to hold in place while the glue dries.
