A new toy in town

There's been a bit of an owl production line going on for a while now; I've made mountains of them, all kinds of sizes and colours - some have found new homes, but quite a few are still here...
Anyway, it's time to branch out and try something new, so I've started making elephants.

Not exactly sure why elephants, though it probably has something to do with the simple, retro 70's shape again. Always drawn to that. I found a few pictures I liked and came up with a rough pattern... then began tinkering.

I'm sure there's a proper method for working out the correct size of gusset you need - I've put one on top and one underneath to improve the shape, and used the see-how-it-goes method, so the elephants are evolving...
Definitely tested my moderate sewing machine skills with the corners and joins, but I am speeding up!

I'd love a little help with the ears - I've made some using the same fabric and others with crocheted ears, and can't decide....

This is the latest Ellie, made from a piece of vintage sheet - I could go for the same fab fabric, or use some cheery, bright orange wool, what do you think?

  4. They are gorgeous, well done you. My opinion on the ears is matching fabric, but then I am quite a matchy-matchy sort of person.

  5. They're great - lovely fabrics! I like both the fabric and the crochet ears - or (to throw a spanner in the works!) you could do the ears in a toning plain material? x

    1. ...I'm liking that spanner Abby! And if I did the body plain with patterned ears, my vintage material would go further which sounds good! I'll give it a try x

  7. The elephants are gorgeous and the fabric just makes them looks so unique. I like both ears but for some reason I'm more drawn to the crochet ones. I think your use of bright and unusual fabric is great.

  12. Gorgeous elephants - and I'd say stick with both types of ears - some people would like the matching ears and others the crochet.

    1. the top one is a vintage 70's sheet I found in a charity shop, all the rest came from Rose Tinted Rags in Hereford which is packed full of recycled/salvaged material and haberdashery. Such a brilliant place! A little slice of fabric heaven!

  16. oooh these are gorgeous! Amazing fabrics! They are all adorable, i'm sure there will be plenty of people who want one of their very own :)

I think orange ears sound perfect for the last one! x

  17. Your elephants are lovely. I can't resist combining crochet and fabric so it would have to be the crochet ears for me - I love the combination of texture as well as pattern. x

  18. They are so adorable !!!! Whilst I prefer the ears to be in fabric, I think you need to do a couple in crotchet so customers can choose which they like xx

  20. Love them! Think I prefer the fabric ears but it's a close thing. Recognised the fabric on the last elephant - had those sheets as a child in the 70s and I believe my mother still has them! x

    1. Thanks Lesley! Wish I had the whole sheet, but sadly just a corner - maybe enough for one more elephant if I'm lucky.
Love vintage sheets, so great for toys! x
